What about the surprises in your life?

Surprises. They catch us off guard, don’t they? And it is this unexpected situation that creates a strong memory because it is out of the ordinary.

Right now, close your eyes and see a surprise that might pop up for you. Right off the top of my head, I can remember Paul giving me a mikimoto pearl necklace for my first mother’s day, Katie giving me a picture book from her wedding, Sam giving me a picture book from our travels in Spain. Ame singing O mio babbino caro which is my favorite song to hear from her since she’s classically trained as an opera singer.

The time Grant (my second husband) and Samantha had roses delivered to me in Italy at the hotel I was staying with Ame. It was mother’s day, and both he and Samantha had the hotel manager get them for me. Ame and I had come home from tourist activities, and there were these fantastic flowers in our room. I went wild with joy and surprise. This thought had never crossed my mind before and to have someone do this was spectacular.  I have a poster board that my husband wrote me from the farm one of the very first times he went away for a very long time. It was sweet, sensitive and loving and I cherish these thoughts on paper.

The time I had been in my house for less than a year, and in the middle of the morning, I felt like my house was on water because the floor was moving and it was an earthquake and lest I forget, meeting both of my husbands for the first time were jolting to my heart.

Touching upon a few of these memories opens me up.  So many good memories. I remember these stories because they are rich in experiences. Once you get past the opening of your memory heart ( that might creak a little), the memories start flooding in.

These are terrific stories that can be remembered in a beautiful story and read over and over. How much we forget and yet, if our memories and stories are in a book, we can entertain ourselves with our life.

I helped Tami do this for her husband’s 60th birthday. It was a surprise party. She had family and friends send thoughts, stories and pictures about Jim and then we put the book together. I edited and formatted it, and the book was printed for every table to have at Jim’s Surprise Dinner. Memories saved in a book. I also have done this for my Grandson and for Mom who turned 85 this past spring. Mom reads her book almost every day and can’t believe the things people have said about her. I tell her they’re right, people mean what they say and they love her.

Surprise books for people is an awesome thing because feelings, emotions, adventure, love, learning, silliness, terror, fears, chance encounters have been played out, and we know the ending. It’s good to remember our stories. They nourish us.
