Today is the last day of my Indiegogo Campaign, and I would appreciate your help. These stories help us remember how powerful are memories are. Here’s one for my book.

I had just turned four when my brother was born twelve days later. He was born on my Dad’s birthday. October 28th was my Gramma’s birthday, and we were celebrating her birthday. I don’t know what time it was, but my mom felt Donnie had been sleeping too long. She went in to check on him and found him DEAD (He had an undiagnosed heart problem that no one knew about during that time.)

There were no hysterics. There were just the basics of burial immediately. There were three children: my cousin Rob, who is the same age as me and my sister (who was 16 months older than us) and me. No one told us anything. We were told that we were going next door (to where Rob’s other sets of Grandparents lived). It was to be a party. We could watch TV and stay up late.

We were watching TV when both Rob and I stood up and walked over to the window. It was the night and it seemed natural to us that we could see Donnie’s soul because we both pointed out the window at the same time and said, “Look, there goes Donnie’s soul back to heaven.” It freaked both Gramma’s out. 

Somewhere, somehow the mystery of life unfolds for those who see with clear eyes.

It’s not a long story beyond the fact that my parents received no grief counseling (unheard of in those days) and they both took the blame personally. That story is important to me because I remember it whenever I need to remember that we have unseen connections everywhere. I know that’s a remarkable story I want in a book.
